NET is a nationwide entrance exam for postgraduates seeking either a Ph.D. or a teaching career in Indian universities and colleges. Passing NET is a mandatory requirement to qualify for Assistant Professor positions and Junior Research Fellowships (JRF) at Indian institutions.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) conducts NET for most subjects.For Science subjects, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) conducts the CSIR-NET exam
You must possess a Master’s degree or equivalent qualification in the relevant subject from a UGC-recognized university or institution.
The minimum marks requirement is 55% for General/Unreserved/General-EWS category candidates.
Candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), Other Backward Class (OBC) (non-creamy layer), Persons with Disability (PwD), and Transgender categories get a relaxation of 5%. They only need a minimum of 50% marks in their Master’s degree.
There’s no upper age limit for Assistant Professor posts. However, if you’re aiming for the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) along with Assistant Professor eligibility, the age limit is 30 years.
The UGC NET exam pattern consists of two papers conducted over a total duration of 3 hours.
